“We received a recommendation from my daughter’s Audiologist that this program would benefit her in her goals of improving her reading and spelling. Elise is now using the skills taught in the Lexercise program to decode new words she comes across in her reading. Her reading speed and comprehension have improved. Her Lexercise coach was very encouraging and Elise’s confidence grew with reading and spelling.”

Jaime Pasieniuk, Lexercise Professional Therapy Parent

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a dyslexia tutor and a dyslexia therapist?

As usual, differentiating the words themselves differentiates the concepts.

Therapy comes from the Greek therapeía, meaning “healing”.

Tutoring comes from tutor and the Latin tutorem, meaning “guardian, watcher”.

Therapy is designed to be a remedial, rehabilitating, or curative process. As such, it must be based on science. Language-literacy therapy involves using methods that have proven to normalize and remediate language processing difficulties.

Tutoring, on the other hand, is designed to assist a student in completing classwork assignments and/or preparing for exams. Thus, tutoring is not designed to improve the student’s language-literacy processing but to help a student cope with academic demands.

The Lexercise Structured Literacy Curriculum™ is designed to improve students’ language-literacy processing, including decoding, letter formation, spelling, reading comprehension, and reading & writing fluency.  Of course, improving language-processing skills usually results in improved academic performance. Our Professional Therapy works so well that we guarantee your child will improve one whole grade level in 2 months, or your 3rd month is on us! Learn more about the Lexercise Guarantee.

If you’d like to read more about the difference between dyslexia tutoring and dyslexia therapy, you can visit this blog post: Educational Therapy vs. Tutoring: What Parents Should Know.

I see a lot of acronyms after the therapists’ names. What do these mean?

Our dyslexia therapists are world-class. You will find that they all have at least one, if not many accreditations and certifications. But what do they mean? Here is a list of some of the various certifications our therapists have earned:

AOGPE – Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners & Educators

CALP – Certified Academic Language Practitioner (Academic Language Therapy Association)

CALT – Certified Academic Language Therapist (Academic Language Therapy Association)

CCC – Certificate of Clinical Competence (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association)

CDP – Certified Dyslexia Practitioner (International Dyslexia Association)

PCET – Professionally Certified Educational Therapist (National Institute for Learning Development)

SLDS – Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (International Dyslexia Association & the Center for Effective Reading Instruction)

SLDI  – Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist (International Dyslexia Association & the Center for Effective Reading Instruction)

SLDT – Structured Literacy Dyslexia Teacher (International Dyslexia Association)

TESOL – Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL International Association)

How will my child be matched with a Lexercise therapist?

We will work with our therapy group administrators to match your child with one of our highly-qualified therapists based on your needs. All of our therapists are not only experts in structured literacy but also in teletherapy, so they will ensure that your student is able to engage in the sessions and that their instructional needs are met.

Do you offer office-based therapy?

We do not. This is because online intervention is just as effective as office-based intervention:

  1. 1) Office-based therapy has inadequate guardrails to ensure effective implementation.
  2. 2) Research supports the efficacy of online therapy.
  3. 3) Online therapy is not restricted by location, so it is more convenient.

Lexercise Professional Therapy is optimized for teletherapy and is very effective. Screens are attention magnets for kids and Lexercise Therapists are experts in using the technology to direct the student’s attention, using multisensory learning.

Professional Therapy is a partnership between the therapist, the parent, and the student. For the student to benefit most from this therapy (and to meet the requirements of the Lexercise Guarantee), the parent must be present and engaged in the weekly lessons. It is often easier for a parent to be present for all sessions when they are delivered through teletherapy.

Some parents are concerned about the screen time aspect of teletherapy. There was a shift in the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on screen time for children. “The new guidelines, especially for very young children, shift the focus from WHAT is on the screen to WHO else is in the room” (Kamenetz, 2016). Lexercise lessons are built around adult-child interactions and conversations, which is very much in line with the AAP recommendations on screens and screen time.  You can learn more about our teletherapy approach in this blog article: What is Teletherapy? Or discuss this further with one of our teletherapists by requesting a free consultation.
